Cooking for Your Family Shouldn't Require a Working Oven to Be Optional

There's something about a broken oven or a burner that won't light that makes the whole kitchen feel off. It's not just the appliance — it's dinner. It's the ability to cook the way you normally cook, feed your family the way you normally feed them, and keep the household running the way it's supposed to run.

Whether your oven stopped holding temperature, your gas burner refuses to ignite, or your range display went dark and won't respond, Appliance Repair & Rescue diagnoses and repairs cooking appliances across the Treasure Valley. We work on gas and electric ovens, freestanding ranges, slide-in ranges, and built-in cooktops — and we'll tell you honestly what the repair involves and what it costs before we start.

What's Going Wrong With Your Oven or Cooktop?

These are the most common issues we diagnose and repair across the Treasure Valley.

If your refrigerator or freezer is doing any of these things, it's time to call.

OVEN PROBLEMS

Problem 1 — Oven Won't Heat or Takes Forever to Reach Temperature On electric ovens, this almost always points to a failed bake element, a faulty broil element, or a malfunctioning oven temperature sensor. On gas ovens, the igniter is the first thing to check — a weak or failing igniter is the most common cause of a gas oven that won't heat properly. We identify which component has failed before recommending any parts.

Problem 2 — Oven Temperature Is Off If your oven runs hot, runs cold, or produces unevenly cooked food even when preheated fully, the temperature sensor or the oven's control board is usually responsible. A miscalibrated thermostat can often be adjusted without a full replacement.

Problem 3 — Broiler Not Working On electric ovens, a failed broil element is the typical culprit — it's a separate heating element from the bake element and fails independently. On gas ovens, the broiler igniter or gas valve can be the issue

Problem 4 — Self-Clean Cycle Problems A self-clean cycle that won't start, won't complete, or leaves the oven locked and unresponsive afterward is usually a door latch motor issue or a control board fault. This is more common than most homeowners realize and very fixable.

Problem 5 — Oven Door Won't Close Properly A door that doesn't seal fully lets heat escape continuously — your oven runs longer, uses more energy, and still can't reach temperature consistently. Worn door hinges and a damaged door gasket are the usual causes.

COOKTOP & BURNER PROBLEMS

Problem 7 — Gas Burner Won't Ignite If you're hearing clicking but getting no flame, or no response at all when you turn the knob, the issue is usually a dirty or cracked igniter, a clogged burner cap, or a faulty spark module. In many cases, a thorough cleaning of the burner components resolves it without any parts replacement.

Problem 8 — Gas Burner Clicking Constantly A burner that keeps clicking after it's lit — or even when the stove is off — is almost always moisture in the igniter assembly. This commonly happens after a boilover. It usually resolves on its own as the components dry, but if it persists, the igniter switch may need replacement.

Problem 9 — Electric Burner Not Heating On coil cooktops, a burner that doesn't heat is usually the burner element itself or the burner socket — both inexpensive and straightforward to replace. On smooth-top glass ceramic cooktops, the heating element beneath the glass or the infinite switch controlling that burner is typically the fault.

Problem 10 — Uneven Flame on Gas Burner A weak, uneven, or yellow-orange flame instead of a strong blue one usually means the burner ports are clogged with grease or food debris. A thorough cleaning often fixes it. If the flame remains uneven after cleaning, the gas valve or pressure regulator may need attention.

Questions We Hear All the Time

Q: My gas oven ignites but takes a really long time to preheat. What's going on?

A: A slow preheat on a gas oven is almost always a weak igniter. The igniter does two jobs — it glows hot enough to open the gas safety valve and ignites the gas. When it starts to fail, it still works, but not efficiently. The oven lights eventually, but the igniter isn't strong enough to open the valve quickly. Replacing the igniter is usually the fix — it's one of the most common oven repairs we do.

A: Error codes vary by brand, but here are some common ones we see:

Samsung NE/NX series: SE (touchpad shorted), NE (oven sensor), C-d0 (door lock issue)

LG LRE/LRG series: F3 (oven temperature sensor), ErrF (oven overheating)

Frigidaire: F10 (runaway temperature — turn off power immediately), F11 (shorted keypad), F30 (oven sensor open)

GE: F2 (oven overheating), F7 (control board/touchpad fault)If you see an F10 on a Frigidaire or an F2 on a GE — codes indicating the oven is overheating — shut the breaker off and call us. Those aren't codes to ignore.

A: The stove itself is safe to use with one burner out — but don't use that burner with a manual flame source as a workaround unless you're certain the gas valve is functioning correctly and not leaking. If you smell gas near a burner that won't light, don't attempt to light it manually. Turn the knob off, ventilate the kitchen, and call us.

Q: My oven runs too hot — everything burns before the timer goes off. Can that be fixed?

A: Yes. Temperature calibration issues are common and usually come down to a faulty oven temperature sensor or a control board that's reading the sensor incorrectly. In some cases, the thermostat can be recalibrated through the oven's settings menu without any parts replacement. We'll check both before recommending a repair.

A: A cracked glass ceramic cooktop surface can be replaced — the glass top itself is a serviceable part on most models. That said, depending on the age of the unit and the cost of the glass replacement, it's worth comparing that cost against a new cooktop before committing to the repair. We'll give you an honest assessment either way.

A: Yes — gas and electric ovens, gas and electric cooktops, freestanding ranges, slide-in ranges, and double ovens. If it cooks food in a Treasure Valley kitchen, we likely service it.
