What's Going On With Your Dishwasher?

Here are the most common dishwasher problems we diagnose and fix across the Treasure Valley.

If your refrigerator or freezer is doing any of these things, it's time to call.

DISHWASHER PROBLEMS

Problem 1 — Not Draining Standing water left in the bottom of the dishwasher after a cycle is one of the most common calls we get. It's almost always a clogged drain filter, a blocked drain hose, a failed drain pump, or a garbage disposal connection that's backing up into the dishwasher drain line. We trace the source before we recommend any repair.

Problem 2 — Dishes Coming Out Dirty A dishwasher that runs a full cycle and leaves dishes with residue, food particles, or a cloudy film isn't doing its one job. The culprit is usually a clogged spray arm, a failing wash pump, a malfunctioning detergent dispenser, or water temperature that isn't reaching the minimum needed for effective cleaning. In some cases it's a water supply issue rather than a mechanical fault.

Problem 3 — Not Filling With Water A dishwasher that starts its cycle but never actually fills is usually dealing with a faulty water inlet valve, a kinked supply line, or a float switch that's stuck in the closed position and telling the machine it's already full when it isn't.

Problem 4 — Door Won't Latch or Seal A dishwasher won't run if the door isn't fully latched — it's a safety interlock built into every unit. A door that won't close cleanly, a latch that won't catch, or a door seal that's cracked and allowing leaks are all repairable issues. A damaged door seal left unaddressed also leads to water damage on the cabinet floor beneath the unit.

Problem 5 — Leaking Water Leaks need locating before they need fixing. A leak at the door usually points to a worn door gasket. A leak from underneath the unit can come from a failed pump seal, a cracked hose connection, or a loose water inlet fitting. We find the source before recommending any parts or labor.

Problem 6 — Not Starting or Not Completing a Cycle A dishwasher that won't begin a cycle — or one that starts and stops partway through — is usually dealing with a control board fault, a failed door latch switch, a thermal fuse that's blown, or a problem with the control panel itself. A hard reset (cutting power at the breaker for 60 seconds) is always worth trying before calling, but if the problem returns, it needs diagnosis.

Problem 7 — Unusual Noises During Operation A dishwasher running a normal cycle produces a steady wash sound. Grinding, rattling, or loud humming during operation usually points to something specific — a piece of broken glass or debris caught in the pump, a failing wash motor, or a spray arm that's cracked and hitting the dish rack during rotation.

Problem 8 — Error Codes on the Display Modern dishwashers from Bosch, Samsung, LG, and other brands display error codes when something's wrong. Here are some of the most common ones we see in Treasure Valley homes:

Bosch: E15 (water in base pan — anti-flood triggered), E24/E25 (drain fault), E09 (heating element fault)

Samsung: OC/0C (overfill), 4C (water supply issue), 5C/SC (drain error)LG: AE (leak detected), OE (drain error), HE (heater fault)

Whirlpool/Maytag: F8 E4 (flood switch), F9 E1 (drain issue), F6 E4 (water inlet fault)If a reset doesn't clear the code, call us — we'll diagnose it in person.

ANDS WE SERVICE

Bosch — the most repair-request brand we handle on dishwashers. Bosch units are well-built and worth repairing. The E15 anti-flood error and E24 drain fault are among the most common calls we receive on these units. The SHPM, SHPX, and SHEM series appear most frequently in Treasure Valley kitchens.

KitchenAid — premium units with occasional control board faults, door latch wear, and wash motor issues on older models. Worth repairing given the quality of the original build.

Whirlpool & Maytag — among the most common dishwashers in Treasure Valley homes. Reliable performers that most commonly need drain pump attention, door gasket replacement, and control board service as they age.

Samsung — known for drain errors and water supply faults. The DW series appears most frequently in newer Treasure Valley homes. OC and 5C error codes are the most common calls we receive.

LG — including the LDF and LDT series. Drain errors (OE) and leak detection faults (AE) are the most frequent service calls on these units.

GE & GE Profile — reliable mid-range units. Common repairs include wash motor failure, door latch wear, and control board faults on older Profile series models.

Frigidaire & Electrolux — frequent drain pump and door seal repairs. The Gallery and Professional series appear regularly in Treasure Valley kitchens.

Miele — premium European units that require precise diagnosis. Control module faults and drain pump issues are the most common calls. Worth repairing given the significant replacement cost.

Questions We Hear All the Time

Q: My dishwasher has standing water at the bottom after every cycle. What should I check before calling?

A: Two things worth checking yourself first. One — Clean the drain filter. It's at the bottom of the dishwasher tub, usually a twist-out cylinder. Food debris accumulates there, and a clogged filter is the single most common cause of poor drainage. Two — check that your garbage disposal knockout plug was removed when the dishwasher was installed. If the dishwasher drain connects to a relatively new disposal and has never drained properly, this is sometimes the cause. If neither resolves it, call us.

A: The E15 error on Bosch dishwashers means the anti-flood system has been triggered — water has collected in the base pan beneath the unit and the safety switch has shut the machine down. This is usually caused by a small internal leak that's been accumulating over time. The fix involves tilting the unit to drain the base pan, identifying the source of the leak, and repairing it. It's not a reason to replace the dishwasher — but it does need proper diagnosis rather than a reset.

A: The honest answer depends on the age of the unit and the nature of the repair. For quality brands like Bosch, KitchenAid, and Miele, repair almost always makes more financial sense than replacement — these units are built to last 15+ years, and a repair at year 8 is money well spent. For entry-level units under $400, a major repair like a wash motor or control board starts to approach replacement cost, and the conversation is worth having. We'll give you our honest assessment when we're in front of the machine.

Q: My dishwasher leaves a white film on everything. Is that a repair issue?

A: Usually not — it's almost always a water quality issue rather than a mechanical fault. The Treasure Valley has moderately hard water, and mineral deposits from hard water leave a white or cloudy film on dishes and glassware over time. Using a rinse aid consistently, running a monthly cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or white vinegar, and checking that your water temperature is reaching at least 120°F usually resolves it. If the film persists after addressing those factors, we'll look at whether the heating element is functioning correctly.

A: Yes — a door gasket that's cracked, torn, or no longer seating correctly is a straightforward replacement on most dishwasher models. It's worth fixing promptly because a leaking door seal causes water damage to the cabinet floor beneath the unit over time. We'll check the door alignment and latch as well while we're there — sometimes a misaligned door is contributing to the seal problem.

A: Yes — freestanding, built-in, and panel-ready configurations from all major brands. Panel-ready units take a little more access work but are fully within our scope.
